Kullu Project began in 2002, when a group of former students from Atlantic College went to the Kullu Valley to run extracurricular workshops for children. Since then, the Kullu Project team has put many more volunteers in contact with schools and orphanages there. By creating a steady flow of committed volunteers, we aim to have a sustained, longterm impact.
Aloke Devichand, Malaysia Co-founder of the Kullu Project in 2002.My family is originally from the Kullu Valley, and I decided to take time out from university to help set-up the project. I had worked in the field of youth development while at Atlantic College, and I was keen to use these skills in the valley. Alongside my work with
Kullu Project, I am a journalist covering the Asia Pacific region for a
current affairs series on Al Jazeera English Television.
Katherine Footer, UK I volunteered with the Kullu Project in 2006 while taking some time out before commencing my training at the English Bar. After returning to the UK I set-up an initiative to secure educational sponsorship for the children at Mrs Sudershana Thakur's orphanage in Manali. I am now training to be a doctor and continue to run the sponsorship scheme. Anyone interested in sponsoring a child or any past volunteers interested in setting up their own Kullu Education initiative can contact me.
Phil Freestone
I was part of a group of schoolfriends from Carlisle who went to Kullu
in 2008. We knew about The Kullu Project through friends, and wanted
to take a break from our careers to volunteer in India. We worked in
the orphanages and schools, but also went with the aim of improving the
way the project functions. After working on the project, I went to work as
an English Tutor at The University of Nottingham's campus in Ningbo,
China.
Laura Norris, UK I
belong to the first group of volunteers that went to the Kullu Valley
in 2002. I spent a lot of time there with the Vashisht Orphanage and
have followed developments in the Kullu Project ever since. I am now
graduated from university and after working with the German Development
Bank in Ankara for a year, I have returned to study for a Master
Degree.
| Ankit Sood, India Co-founder of the Kullu Project in 2002. I am a lecturer of Sustainable Tourism in the Govt. College at Kullu and run an ecotourism company called Sunshine Himalayan Adventures. I act as the project's local coordinator, which involves helping volunteers liaise with the organisations that we work with.
Ffion Thomas, UK Volunteer Coordinator I
am originally from Mid Wales and took part in the Kullu Project during
my Gap Year in 2004, after attending the United World College of the
Atlantic. I then took on the role of volunteer coordinator for the
Kullu Project and will therefore be the person guiding you through the
application process and helping you out with all your questions until
you arrive in the Kullu Valley should you apply to volunteer with the
project. I am currently studying history and politics at Durham
University in the North East of England. In my spare time I enjoy
singing, folk music and dancing. Max Wallraff, Germany My classmate Aloke Devichand invited me and I went to the valley for a few weeks when the project was established in 2002. Now, six years later, I welcomed the chance to get involved by building and maintaining this website.
Felicity Yeo, Singapore While
volunteering in the Kullu Valley in 2006, I spent most of my time at
the Jibhi Orphanage, Kailash Bodhi School and Mrs Sudershana's
Orphanage. I run the education sponsorship scheme for students from
Kailash Bodhi School education. Please contact me if you would like
any info about my time as a volunteer, or about the sponsorship
scheme. Kris Mackay
